Safe and sound in industrial environments thanks to robust radar technology

The ISR-3360 radar system provides collision protection for industrial robots and machines.

The modern manufacturing industry relies on a high degree of automation to maximise productivity. Beyond digitalisation, robotics is also becoming increasingly present in factory buildings. In modern working environments, where people, machines, vehicles, or industrial robots continuously converge, systems for prevention and safeguarding purposes are required to make automated processes safer. In addition to protecting people and helping avoid collisions, they also enable collaborative work and thus increase efficiency.

Warning against collisions

The more autonomous and automated machines are deployed in cooperation with people, the more effort required to ensure occupational safety. Hazardous areas and the need for safety systems are on the rise in modern factory buildings. Typical application examples include monitoring entryways to protected areas (e.g. during collaborative work); collision protection for cranes or mobile machinery; locking industrial robots or machines from starting up; securing loading areas for autonomous systems; driver assistance for transport vehicles, forklifts, or lorries; and support with docking and positioning.

The scope of tasks for sensors is growing. There is an increasing need for personal protection as well as for protecting against collisions between machines and vehicles. Damage to sophisticated and expensive devices must be avoided, as it results in high costs and production failures.

The systems must scan the danger zones and detect objects that cause damage or are susceptible to damage. Objects, obstacles, vehicles, and – especially – people must be reliably detected and protected. The sensors provide early warning of a potential collision and trigger protective mechanisms, such as a machine stop or a deceleration of movement.

Machine safeguarding with radar

Radar-based sensor technology works with high-frequency electromagnetic waves and is the only measuring method that can detect hazardous areas in 3D. This allows hazard zones to be safeguarded by one sensor in all dimensions. Radar sensors detect movements and the presence of static objects and provide additional information that enables further comfort functions to be implemented.

The technology is considered robust, because it is resistant to many environmental influences such as temperature, light, or weather conditions. Dirt, extreme heat, or dust won’t cause its functionality to fail. It detects different materials and penetrates through non-conductive materials such as plastic, which can be used to design the housing. Heat-insulating work clothes or special protective clothing can also be detected.

Presentation of product

The ISR-3360 radar system – the flexible safety solution for industry

The new product from InnoSenT is the optimum and innovative solution for reliable detection of movement and presence in industrial environments.

The MIMO radar system boasts precise and continuous detection of multiple objects, moving or standing still, in the working area to be monitored. It also measures speed and distance and provides information about the angular position and direction of movement. Depending on the selected parameter settings, the maximum range is 100 m.

60 GHz and 3D radar resolution enable measurements with millimetre precision and the exact distinction between individual objects or persons. Tracking algorithms not only cluster several detection points together into one object – they also track their movement history. Even if an object leaves the detection area, the radar system continues to display the still present object. This reduces false detections and provides top safety and reliability. The three-dimensional monitoring allows conclusions to be drawn about the object’s volume and position, thus allowing special protection for dangerous areas.

Flexible applications

Anti-collision protection and safeguarding of machines require advanced systems that are up to any challenge on site. That’s why the radar experts from InnoSenT place emphasis on the ability to flexibly deploy the ISR-3360 radar system. The product’s sophisticated configuration options enable it to be optimally adapted to the actual use case. Precise coordination with the individual circumstances boosts performance in object detection. The system can be flexibly installed on various stationary mobile devices, systems, or vehicles, and in different positions, due to its detection range that is dynamically selectable via the range and horizontal angular position settings. The maximum detection area has an aperture angle of 100° horizontally and 20° vertically.

Freely definable detection fields

Users can configure up to four areas that cause a signal to be outputted when an object is present in the area. This enables danger zones or warning fields to be defined. Each of the four configurable detection fields controls an Ethernet output.

For further data processing, the radar system outputs a cloud of points for the radar detections.

Challenging environments – no problem

The ISR-3360 is contained in an IP67 housing and is thus protected against water and moisture. It has M12 connections. The radar’s operating temperature is from -40° to +85 °C. As a radar system, it can also be deployed in harsh, industrial environments, even despite heavy dirt, smoke, vibrations, poor weather conditions, and darkness. Industries such as chemicals, food production, glass and wood processing, raw material extraction, or agriculture benefit from sensor technology.

The ISR-3360’s advanced technology, flexibility in use, and robustness make it a high-performance and reliable partner for safety in the modern industrial sector. Radar sensors for the smart factory

Robotics, automation, safety & collision protection

With industrial robots, more and more sensors are finding their way into modern factories. By detecting the environment and events, they enable safe interaction between man and machine and protect against collisions. Without the integration of sensors, machines or robots cannot react to their environment. Typical applications are automation, personal protection, navigation, positioning, autonomous vehicles and collision protection. Radar offers three-dimensional environment detection and reliable, precise detection in harsh industrial environments.
